How to tell if an avocado is ripe
Finding good avocados can be a challenge. A ripe avocado should have a dark brown skin. When you gently squeeze it, the avocado should have a soft give. If your fingers punch right through the skin, chances are it’s overripe and won’t have a good flavor. If it’s as hard as a rock, give it a few days to ripen up. You can speed up the ripening process by putting your avocado in a brown paper bag with a banana or a kiwi. These fruits produce gasses that will help the avocado ripen more quickly. Be sure to fold the paper bag closed to seal in the gasses.
